The GMC V2500 Suburban was a full-sized SUV introduced for the 1987 model year. Why was it named that, instead of following the traditional C/K naming convention? Put simply, this SUV was among the last of the "Rounded Line" generation. In 1987, GMC also introduced a new generation of trucks that were built on the GMT 400 platform. Since those used the C/K nomenclature, the company changed these previous generation models to avoid confusion. The "V" marked the SUV as four-wheel drive, while the "2500" indicated that it was a three-quarter-ton size vehicle.

The SUV drew power from a range of gas and diesel V8 engines, which were all equipped with electronic fuel injectors rather than the carburetors of old. Those engines were teamed to a four-speed automatic transmission that managed gear changes. Anti-lock brakes were added as a standard feature in 1990. Production of the GMC V2500 Suburban ended after the 1991 model year.
